SEBI Grade A Negative Marking
SEBI deducts marks for every incorrect answer, which is called negative marking, and every aspirant must understand how negative markings work in SEBI Grade A exams for better score accuracy.
Check below for detailed information on negative markings across both phases.
- Phase 1: SEBI Grade A Phase 1 applies negative marking of 1/4th on every incorrect answer in both papers. Negative marks of 1/4th signify 0.25 marks deduction if question is worth 1 mark.
- Phase 2: SEBI only applies negative marking on the MCQs (Multiple Choice Questions); hence, only paper 1 of this phase has negative markings of 1/4th marks. Paper 2 of Phase 2 is descriptive, which is why there is no negative marking.
It is clear that there will be a negative marking if a MCQ question is answered incorrectly, but SEBI does not apply negative marking on unanswered questions.

How SEBI Grade A Final Merit is Calculated
An aspirant attempted the SEBI Grade A examination and cleared all the stages, with the help of his case, I will explain to you how the marks, weightage, and formulas work in SEBI Grade A. Now let’s look into how his final merit list will be made step-by-step.
It is important to know his score in both phase 2 and interviews to move forward:
- Phase 2 (written exam): He scored 120 marks out 200 in Phase 2.
- Interview: In the final round, he obtained 9 marks out of 15.
Now after knowing his marks, we can understand the calculation for the final merit list.
Step 1: Apply weightage to SEBI Grade A Phase 2 marks
As you know, the Phase 2 exam of SEBI Grade A is out of 200 marks that carry 85% of the weightage. In order to know it weightage in numbers, we need to first use the given formula.
Formula – Number of marks obtained/Total marks x percentage of weightage
- The obtained marks were 120 in Phase 2
- Total marks were 200 in Phase
- percentage of weightage is 85
Hence, according to the formula: 120/200 × 85 = 51
So, the 51 marks from Phase 2 will be added to the final merit list.
Step 2: Add interview marks
There is no need to apply weightage to Interview marks as the total marks and percentage of weightage are the same. Let me show how even after using the formula, the marks will remain the same.
- Obtained marks were 9 in the interview
- Total marks were 15 in the interview.
- percentage of weightage is 15
Hence according to the formula: 9/15 × 15 = 9
So, the Interview marks remain the same as before, which means 9 marks from the interview will be added to the final merit list.
Step 3: Calculate final merit
This is the last step to calculate the final merit of the aspirant; to do so, I have given a simple formula below.
Formula – Final Score = Phase 2 marks + Interview marks
Hence the final calculation: 51 + 9 = 60
Final Interpretation
The aspirant’s final merit score is 60. Most of the score comes from Phase 2 due to its higher weight, while the interview adds a smaller but still meaningful contribution.
Conclusion
I have covered every important detail regarding the SEBI Grade A exam pattern, from overviews of the number of questions, papers, marks, marking scheme, and phases weightage to dedicated sections for each, to make all the information as easy as I can for you to understand.
I hope that this page helps improve your knowledge, making your pathway to SEBI Grade A simpler.
That said, “I wish you the best of luck for your examinations!
