Topics Covered: UGC NET 2023 Cut Off, 2023 Cut Off Dates, Factors Determining Cut Off, How to Download Cut Off,  Cut Off Calculation Procedure, Methodology to Calculate JRF & AP Cut Offs, Normalisation Process and Previous Year Cut Offs

The UGC NET is an examination which is held twice in a year to recruit candidates for the post of an assistant professor or grant Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) for those who meet the desired cutoff.

For announcing the final list of the selected candidates, cutoff plays a crucial role and is a major deciding factor in the selection procedure for any exam. The case for UGC NET is no different!

As the cutoff list for the two posts is prepared and released separately, even a slight difference in marks can be game changer for candidates in their final selection for UGC NET.

Therefore, the aspirants are often advised to analyse the trend in cutoffs during past few years and target of scoring marks above the expected cutoff in the exam to be safer side of the competition.

Announced at the final stage of the exam process, i.e., alongside or even after the declaration of the final result, the UGC NET cutoff is perhaps the most anticipated factor in the exam process.

With such huge competition every year for UGC NET examination, the cutoff when released is surely a game changer for many!

To help you know more about the topic, I will be discussing everything in detail related to the UGC NET Cut off 2023 itself and subject – wise cutoff

So, without further ado, let’s get started!

Table of Content – UGC NET Cut Off

UGC NET Cut Off

The UGC NET final answer key, cut off and results are released by NTA on its official website approximately on the same day or one after the other for a particular UGC NET cycle.

Let me explain it in a bit more detail. After all the UGC NET exams of a particular cycle are conducted, the results are announced in a few weeks’ time. That is the time when the UGC NET cut offs are usually also released.

Now, it should be noted that the cut off lists for the posts of ‘Assistant Professor’ and Junior Research Fellowship (JRF)’ are released separately. Meaning that through these two different lists, a candidate will be able to understand if the scores he secures is equivalent to the UGC NET qualifying marks for the JRF, or that for the post of Assistant Professor.

Factors Determining UGC NET Cut off

There is no specific answer to how many factors affect the cut off. But according to me and exam practitioners from all over the country, there are a limited factors that affect UGC NET Cut off and that can help in analysis of UGC NET cut off.

Some of the known ones are:

  • Number of candidates that have appeared in the exam
  • Difficulty level of the exam
  • Total number of seats for which the exam is taken
  • Cut off trends of previous year
  • While these are identified factors, still no one can predict an accurate cut off.

UGC NET Cut Off: Calculation Procedure

To help you understand better about the calculation procedure for UGC NET cutoff, I have provided the steps to explain how the cut offs for the post of Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) and Assistant Professor (AP) are determined in a simplified manner:

Step 1: As per the official notification for the UGC NET December 2021 and June 2022 (Merged cycle), only 6% of the total candidates who will appear for the UGC NET exam will qualify (total slots or Eligible for Assistant Professor).

Step 2: The total slots will then be allocated to different categories based on the GoI’s reservation policy.

Step 3: In addition to this, a candidate must have appeared in both papers and secured a minimum of 40% aggregate marks for General and a minimum of 35% aggregate marks for the reserved categories to be considered for either of the posts (‘JRF & AP’ and ‘AP’).

Also, to be noted is that, the UGC NET is conducted for 83 subjects and the Cut off score contrasts from subject to subject.

Step 4: The number of students qualified in any subject for each category is determined according to the methodology endorsed by NTA. I have tried to simplify it below with the help of an example.

FAQs: UGC NET Cutoff

  • image/svg+xml image/svg+xml
How UGC decides the NET JRF Cutoff?

Ok, the process employed by the UGC to decide the NET JRF cutoffs is a bit complicated. Let’s use a scenario to understand this. For instance, I have given below the process of finding out the JRF cut off for economics for the ST category:

    • [Number of ST category candidates that have opted for JRF and have also qualified NET in the subject of economics] X [Total number of JRF seats reserved for ST category] ÷ [Total ST category candidates from all subjects that have opted for JRF post and also have cleared the NET exam.]
    • The Aggregate scores of paper 1 and paper 2 combined, computed with respect to the number of JRF seats allocated for people from the ST category, will help derive the cut off marks for the JRF for the ST category in “economics”.

How can I calculate UGC NET cutoff for “Assistant Professor” post?
The formula used by NTA to calculate UGC NET cutoff can be explained using the following example (Subject – Commerce & Category – General):

    • The no. of candidates from General category who secure at least 40%* aggregate marks in both the papers for General category for ‘Commerce’ (x) Total slots derived for General category (÷) Total no. of candidates from General category overall subjects who secure at least 40%* aggregate marks in both the papers.
    • This formula above gives us the total number of qualifying candidates.
    • Then, the NTA utilizes the aggregate percentage of the two papers in relation to the no. of candidates arrived at (utilizing the above formula) to determine the cut off eligibility for AP post.

  • image/svg+xml image/svg+xml
How to do calculation for UGC NET cutoff for “AP & JRF” post?
The calculation process for UGC NET cutoff can be explained by with the help of an example (Subject – Economics & Category – ST) by using the method for the subject-wise cum class-wise distribution of JRF posts down below:

    • The Number of candidates belonging to ST category who have opted for JRF and have qualified for Eligibility for Assistant Professor both in the subject ‘Economics’ (x) Total JRF slots available for ST category (÷) Total number of candidates belonging to ST category overall subjects who have opted for JRF and have qualified for Eligibility for Assistant Professor.
    • The aggregate of the two paper scores compared to the numbers of JRF openings calculated above will decide the passing Cutoff for JRF in ‘Economics’ for the ST classification

  • image/svg+xml image/svg+xml
What are factors responsible for the UGC NET normalization process?
The method of normalization for UGC NET is applied by NTA for the following factors:

    • As the exam is held on multiple dates with two shifts per day wherein different sets of question papers per shift are provided, the process of normalization is applied to neutralize the difficulty level.
    • The percentile score thus obtained is used to determine the UGC NET Cut off and for the preparation of the merit list.
    • The Cut off dependent on the percentile score is determined up to 7 decimal spots to abstain from batching impact and decrease ties.
