The RBI Grade B exam is one of the most competitive government exams in India, attracting thousands of applicants every year, while only a few clear the final cut-off.

The RBI Grade B cut-off changes annually based on factors like vacancies, exam difficulty, and candidate performance. For example, the Phase 1 cut-off in 2023 increased compared to 2022 due to higher competition and a moderate paper.

Analyzing previous years’ RBI Grade B cut-off scores is essential for understanding trends, competition level, and setting realistic preparation goals.

Below, you’ll find how to check your cut-off along with Phase 1 and Phase 2 cut-offs 2021–2025 to plan your strategy effectively.

Key Takeaways-

As Phase 1 is only qualifying in nature, it does not make any difference whether you clear Phase 1 by 40 marks or 1 mark.

There are no sectional cutoffs in Phase 2, and you only need to clear the overall cutoffs for all 3 papers combined.

Apart from overall cutoff, you must also clear the sectional cut-offs to move to the next phase of the exam.

PwBD cutoffs are usually low but there has been tough competition even with low cutoffs.

Cut Off 2025

What does “Cutoff” really means?

Let’s take a moment to explore the meaning of “cut off.”

The “cut off” refers to the minimum score required for candidates to qualify for the next stage of the selection process.

For example, suppose the score “x” is the cut off mark for the Phase 1 exam. What that means is, the score “x” was the score secured by the last candidate to qualify for Phase 2.

The cut off for each phase is determined by various factors, such as the total number of candidates appearing for the exam, the difficulty level of the exam, and the number of vacancies available. As these factors can change each year, the cut off marks also vary accordingly.

Understanding the cut off from previous years can be extremely helpful in planning your preparation and candidates must clear both the overall cut off as well as the sectional cut offs (if applicable) for each section within the exam to proceed.

RBI Grade B Sectional & Overall Cut Off

  • For Phase 1 examination, there is a provision for both sectional and overall cutoff in each of the subjects. Therefore, it is important for candidates to be mindful of scoring above the sectional as well as overall cutoff to qualify for the Phase 2 exam.
  • However, in case of Phase 2 exam, the candidates only need to score above the overall cutoff as there is no provision of sectional cutoff. Following which, the candidates will be selected for the final stage, i.e., the Interview.

An important point to note here is, that your marks obtained in the Phase 2 and Interview together would determine your final selection.

Therefore, to ensure getting good score above both sectional and overall cutoff in Phase 1 and Phase 2 overall cutoff, you must prepare diligently for the exam and be thorough with the type of questions asked in both phases.

List of Factors Affecting RBI Grade B Cutoff

Here are the factors which affect the cutoff of the RBI Grade B examination:

    • Difficulty Level of the Exam: The cutoff is affected based on how easy or tough is the exam.
    • Number of Vacancies: The total number of available vacancies in that particular year of examination.
    • Number of Candidates Appearing: This is the quantity count of candidates who will be giving the exam.
    • Performance of Candidates: It is affected based upon how the candidates perform in the particular exam.
    • Marking Scheme: The cut-off of the exam will depend on the marking scheme because if there is a system used to allot marks such as +1 for a correct answer, -0.25 for a wrong one.
    • Normalization Process: A process which is used to adjust scores when the exam is held in two shifts where the difficulty level of one paper might differ than the other.
    • Reservation: A policy where a certain percentage of seats are reserved for specific categories (like SC, ST, OBC, EWS, PwBD, etc.).

The RBI Grade B cut-off marks change every year and they go up or down based on different important factors.

RBI Grade B Cutoff Trends Analysis and Observations

The “cut off” is the minimum benchmark that candidates need to clear for the next round of the selection process.

However, as observed from the previous year’s trends, there is no fixed or dependable benchmark that you can rely on as cut-offs have varied over the years.

Analyzing the cutoff from previous years is helpful to understand the trends, but it does not ensure success because the difficulty level of the exam is different every year.

There are many other factors that determine the RBI Grade B cutoff such as exam difficulty level, total vacancies, total number of appearing candidates, performance of candidates, and sectional cutoffs.

Now, let’s have a look at the cutoffs from the previous 3 years to understand cutoff fluctuations.

    • 2024: The final cutoff for the RBI Grade B exam was 226.75 for the General Category.
    • 2023: However, the cutoff for RBI Grade B exam 2024 stood at 229.00 for the General Category.
    • 2022: The final cutoff for RBI Grade B exam cutoff was 234.50 for candidates belonging to the General Category.

Important Note to Remember: Interestingly, the RBI Grade B Exam Cutoff 2018 for the General Category was 248.50, which was significantly higher.

As you already have a broad understanding of cutoff variations and its unpredictable nature over the year, we can get the following observations.

    • Cut-offs don’t follow a consistent or fixed trend.
    • Previous year cutoffs provide an idea, but they are not dependable.
    • Paper difficulty level plays the most important role in cutoffs variations.
    • A low cutoff in the previous year does not mean that the cutoff for the upcoming year will remain low as well.

In the end, cutoffs vary over the years and are never the same as we already discussed.

Therefore, think of the cutoff as a rough guide, but make your own hard work the only thing you truly depend upon. Your best strategy is to prepare well so that even if the cutoff increases significantly, your name remains on the selection list.

What are the benefits of analyzing RBI Grade B cutoff marks?

By analysing previous years’ cut-offs, candidates can set practical goals, optimise preparation, and improve their chances of final selection.

    • Know benchmarks: Cut-off marks define the minimum scores required at each stage of the RBI Grade B exam, including sectional and overall cut-offs.
    • Set targets: Past RBI Grade B cutoff trends help you to set actual sectional and overall score targets based on actual data.
    • Analyze competition: Year-wise variations indicate changes in competition, number of vacancies, and candidate performance.
    • Understand exam pattern: Cutoff analysis helps to identify which sections are scoring or challenging, helping you decode the exam trend.
    • Plan smartly: Clear benchmarks allow better time allocation, section prioritization, and focus on high-weightage topics.
    • Track performance: Comparing mock test scores with expected cut-offs helps identify weak areas, improve accuracy, and reduce negative marking.
    • Avoid surprises: Regularly tracking cutoffs prepares you for fluctuations due to difficulty level or increased applicants.

Using RBI Grade B previous year cut off marks enables aspirants to create a strategic preparation plan and approach the exam with clarity and confidence.

I have scored just above the RBI Grade B 2024 Phase 1 cut off. What are my chances for final selection?

If you have scored just above the Phase cut off, don’t’ worry, Phase 1 is basically an elimination round. The marks obtained by candidates in it are not taken into consideration when the final RBI Grade B exam scorecard is computed.

So, that basically means, by scoring above the cut off marks in phase 1 you have just been able to secure yourself a seat in the phase 2 paper. Now you must focus on scoring well in the Phase 2 exam and Interview to place yourself on the final selection list.

Are there any cut off marks for the interview round?

No, there isn’t any cut off marks for the interview round (Phase 3) of the RBI Grade B exams.

However, do not make the mistake of underestimating the Interview round, as the scores you secure in this round can make all the difference in terms of getting you through to being an RBI Grade B officer or missing it.

Is there a sectional cut off in the RBI Grade B exam?

Yes, there’s a provision of sectional cut off in the RBI Grade B Phase 1 exam. Therefore, you need to remember not to just focus on the sections you are good at.

Since every section carries its own separate cut off marks, you’d be wise to pay attention to all of them to the required extent. If you want to know about the cut offs in detail, I have made it available here
